About Altos de Losada El Cepón

There is a notion that good viticulturists are well aware of. By the time the grapes reach the winery, much of the work should already be done. Amancio Fernández, the winemaker at Losada Vinos de Finca, knows this better than anyone. Born in Bierzo itself and raised in a family of lifelong viticulturists, he has made this philosophy one of his guiding principles: "The work should be almost complete from the vineyard."

For Amancio, a great wine does not begin in the winery. It starts much earlier, among the vines, in the care of each plot, and in the understanding of the vineyard. With this idea in mind, he spearheaded a radical stylistic change at the winery that transformed its wines. Instead of forcing extractions in the winery or masking the landscape behind heavy oak, he chose to take a step back, listen to the old vines, and let nature take its course at its own pace. The result is this Altos de Losada El Cepón, the natural consequence of doing things well and on time directly in the field.

From Valtuille de Abajo, in the heart of the DO Bierzo, Altos de Losada El Cepón comes from historic plots selected for their uniqueness. The Mencía vines are genuine old vines with low yields, planted at altitudes exceeding 500 metres above sea level, where the fruit ripens slowly, preserving a clean acidity. The soils they thrive on are deep red clay combined with quartzite, an ideal terrain for providing volume, natural hydration, and a very fleshy palate. The climate is Atlantic-continental, characterised by cold winters, mild summers, and marked thermal contrasts between day and night. The variety used is 100% Mencía, cultivated under a philosophy of viticulture that respects biodiversity and harvested entirely by hand.

The production of Altos de Losada El Cepón perfectly reflects this quest for finesse without excess. Once in the winery, the hand-harvested clusters are destemmed, a process that involves separating the grapes from the stalks, and undergo very gentle crushing. The must undergoes alcoholic fermentation, the biological process where yeasts convert the grape sugars into alcohol, in stainless-steel tanks with indigenous yeasts, applying short macerations and gentle pump-overs. Subsequently, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation, the transformation of malic acid into lactic acid to soften the acidity, in wood. To limit the influence of oak and prioritise fruitiness, the ageing is conducted for 15 months in large 500-litre French oak barrels before gentle filtration and bottling.

Altos de Losada El Cepón is an elegant, expressive, and deeply fresh red wine. A demonstration that when the work is done with respect in the vineyard, the glass brings nothing but joy.
