Today we celebrate Valentine’s Day, the patron saint of lovers

14/02/2022 Pairings , Special moments

It is thought that Valentine’s Day emerged as a purely commercial event, but celebrating this day has religious origins and dates back a long time.

In the 3rd century in Rome, Emperor Claudius II thought that young men without families made better soldiers so he forbade marriages. Valentinus was a priest who, opposing this order, began marrying young soldiers and their fiancées and, when emperor Claudius II found out, he ordered priest Valentinus’ execution. He was beheaded in the year 270, on February 14, which is why this date has been chosen as “the day of lovers”.

February 14 has become as loved as it is hated. But the important thing for us is that you find a good reason to open a bottle of wine, whether you are someone who loves or hates Valentine’s Day, whether you are with someone or single, we want to suggest the following pairings to get it right on this or any other day, by yourself or in company because, as the writer Charles Bukowski once said: no good story starts with ‘I was eating a salad’ ;)

3 suggestions of wines to share (or not) this February 14

Strawberries and sparkling wines

Strawberries are said to be an aphrodisiac and they are also the fruit of love! One of the best pairings for this fruit is a cava or champagne. What happens next is up to you.

Oysters and white wine

Oysters are the most famous aphrodisiac food. As well as pairing very well with sparkling wines, why not try them with white wines like those made from the Albariño variety and why not go out and share your enjoyment of them with friends? Share the experience with someone special... you never know what might happen!

Chocolate and port wine

One thing we often see lots of around February 14 is chocolate, which is also an aphrodisiac. Take the opportunity to enjoy it with a Port wine. An exceptional combination that brings joy and happiness whether you’re alone or in company!

Fortunately or unfortunately, there is only one February 14th a year, so, whether alone or with friends, there is always a good reason to enjoy passion and love... for good wine ;D

Happy Valentine’s Day!
