About Domenico Clerico Barolo
The greatness of Barolo lies in the terroir. What makes it unique and the reason why it is known as “the wine of kings, the king of wines” is the place where it is born. Someone who has interpreted this land perfectly is Domenico Clerico, a winegrower who started out with his wife Giuliana when he inherited his father’s land in Monforte d'Alba, in the Langhe (Piedmont) in 1976. From then on, he decided to vinify his own grapes and to expand his property by acquiring new vineyards that were well positioned and characterised by optimal microclimatic characteristics. Today, the winery has 21 hectares of prime vineyards, and following Domenico’s death, the family continues to produce timeless wines that embody the land and the spirit of Barolo that their founder also knew how to interpret.
One of the winery’s greatest successes is Domenico Clerico Barolo. A red wine whose grapes come exclusively from Monforte d'Alba. These are Nebbiolo vines planted between 1968 and 2005 at an altitude of 380 to 330 metres above sea level and cultivated with respectful agriculture. Following a manual harvesting, the grapes are macerated with the skins for 20-30 days. The wine is then aged for 24-30 months in French oak barrels (80% new, 20% used) before being bottled.
The result is sublime. As the great Robert Parker explains “Domenico Clerico Barolo is an elegant expression marked by the very soft barrels representing the truly refined style of Clerico”. The hallmark of one of the great masters of Nebbiolo.
| 2017 |
Domenico Clerico Barolo 2017 is a concentrated red wine with aromas of very ripe black fruits, hints of roses and spicy touches. On the palate it is meaty, velvety and elegant. A full-bodied wine without falling into opulence thanks to the tannins that structure the wine. The finish is long and persistent with delicious fruity touches. |
