Finca Río Negro is a red wine from the V.T. Castilla produced by the Finca Río Negro winery. This wine is a blend of 4 different grape varieties: Tempranillo (60%), Syrah (15%), Merlot (15%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%).
Finca Río Negro is made using grapes taken from 22 hectares of relatively young vineyards, planted at the end of the 20th Centry and the beginning of the 21st, where grapes are cultivated on trellises using the Cordón Royal method. The local region is home to a moderate climate with a stark contrast in temperature between night and day, excellent for the cultivation of grapes. The vineyards are home to limestone soils, with a first layer predominantly clay, with boulders present. The soils are poor in matter, conditions which result in grapes with a stronger character and stronger flavor.
The harvest is carried out manually, with the grapes being transported to the winery in small 18kg capacity boxes to ensure that the grapes do not break and arrive at the winery in the best possible condition. At the winery, the grapes first undergo maceration for 2 weeks. Following this, fermentation is carried out at a fixed temperature of 23º before malolactic fermentation.
Finca Río Negro rests on its natural lees for 2 months before being aged for 3 months in medium toasted French Allier (60%) and American (40%) oak barrels.
The Finca Río Negro winery spans across 600 hectares of land, with its facilities located in the centre. The winery is owned by the Fuentes family, who at the end of the ´90’s decided to set out on a mission to help recuperate winemaking and viticulture in the local region. Their wines stand out for their colour, aroma and profound complexity.
