About Forlong La Fleur 2 Palmas

There are phrases that, when spoken quickly or passed down through generations, end up altering the words and distorting their origins. Something very similar happened on the outskirts of El Puerto de Santa María with an old estate popularly known as El Olivar de Forlón. Behind this popular name lay the legacy of Peter Furlong, a British merchant who had established his estate there centuries ago. Over time, the property was virtually abandoned, and by 2007 only two ancient olive trees stood as witnesses to that past. That same year, Rocío Áspera and Alejandro Narváez embarked on a meticulous restoration project to revive the vineyard, the olive grove, and the original essence of the place. With this reconstruction, the final "g" of the Furlong surname, lost in popular speech, was also restored, giving rise to the definitive name of the project, Forlong. A vinous and artisanal dream that, quite literally, had been awaited "for a long time."

From the municipal area of El Puerto de Santa María, in the province of Cádiz, Forlong La Fleur 2 Palmas embodies the Atlantic typicity and authentic character of the region. The wine originates from an vineyard located in Pago Balbaína Baja, a legendary enclave of the Cádiz region. The palomino vines thrive on albariza de lustrillo soil, a calcareous, whitish, and highly porous earth known for its bright tones, acting as a natural sponge that stores winter rainwater to nourish the plant during the dry summer months. This soil richness is complemented by a purely Mediterranean climate shaped by the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean, where the sea breeze and winds regulate the vineyard's temperature. Adhering to a rigorous ecological philosophy, the vineyard is managed with a deep respect for biodiversity and the environment, with the harvest conducted manually at the optimal moment of ripeness.

In crafting Forlong La Fleur 2 Palmas, the winery employs an artisanal process that honours historical customs. Following the manual harvest, the grapes are sun-dried for 48 hours using the traditional asoleo technique, a practice aimed at partially dehydrating the berries to concentrate sugars, acids, and aromas, thus achieving the desired alcohol level naturally without the need to add alcohol. Subsequently, the grapes are pressed and the must is clarified, separating the suspended solid particles, before being placed in sherry casks made of oak, ranging from 500 to 600 litres, where natural fermentation occurs. Once fermentation is complete, the wine undergoes a static vintage ageing under a veil of flor for 6 years, a fine layer of living yeasts that protects the wine from oxidation and imparts complex aromatic nuances. Unlike the traditional solera and criadera method, this wine is not blended with other vintages, preserving the unique identity of its year.

Forlong La Fleur 2 Palmas is a mature, saline white wine of albariza with admirable persistence, where the limestone, Atlantic breeze, and veil of flor meld into an unforgettable harmony. A sincere and profound sip that pays tribute to the memory of a land reclaimed from oblivion.
