Although sugarcane originated in Asia, it has been cultivated throughout the world because of its value as a source of sugar, playing an important role in the history of colonization and industry in places such as Latin America and the Caribbean. It was introduced in Cuba during the Spanish colonial era, and the island's tropical climate, with its abundant sunshine and rain, proved so conducive to cultivation that it became one of the world's leading sugar producers.
