About Hayman's Old Tom Gin

Did you know that the name Old Tom originates from a black cat? In 18th and 19th century London, gin had a notorious reputation and was sometimes sold illicitly. To evade the law, merchants would place a sign with the silhouette of a cat (Old Tom) on the wall or window of the establishment; if someone wished to purchase, they would drop coins into a slot beneath the cat and receive the gin through a small pipe. Over time, this ingenious trick lent its name to a sweeter, more rounded style of gin, which today remains a historical nod full of character.
 
The Hayman’s distillery, the last family of original distillers in London with an unbroken legacy since 1863, has preserved the tradition while innovating with passion. Their copper stills, affectionately named Marjorie, Karin, and Miranda, meticulously replicate the original distillation process, ensuring a balanced, smooth, and brilliant spirit. Each bottle is a testament to five generations of family history and a commitment to authenticity and excellence in London gin.
