About Bott Kamaka Syrah Terroir de Seyssuel

Given that Bott is the venture of a New Zealander and a Frenchwoman who met in the Rhône while working for Stéphane Ogier, and that from the ground up they have begun crafting wines showcasing the valley's finest attributes, when they introduce Kamaka Syrah Terroir de Seyssuel, they themselves caution: it is the one that requires the most explanation.

Firstly, due to the name. “Kamaka” means rock or stone in Māori, a nod to Graeme's Kiwi roots. Secondly, due to the designation: Seyssuel, situated on the opposite bank of the river to Côte-Rôtie, is still an emerging appellation, with hopes of being elevated to cru status in the coming years.

On this side of the river, the soils consist of mica-schist and gneiss, which glisten under the sun and impart a distinct mineral character compared to the typical granite of Côte-Rôtie. Each vine is cultivated sustainably, respecting the local biodiversity, while the winemaking process combines tradition and precision: controlled fermentation, extended maceration, and 15 months of ageing in French oak barrels, which provide structure and complexity without losing the purity of the fruit.

The result is a deep, elegant syrah with the potential to age for up to 10 years, where the soil's minerality, ripe fruit, and the inherent elegance of the terroir are discernible. Kamaka is a wine that demands attention and time, but rewards with a unique Rhône experience that is fresh, robust, and astonishing.
