About Maixei Dolceacqua Superiore Barbadirame

As a counterbalance to the copy and paste wines that we find in every corner of the world, Vini Estremi (extreme wines) is a project that covers all those small producers who work heroically in geographically inaccessible places to produce unique and precious wines. These are small patches of land torn from mountain, rock and sea that stretch from the far north to the deep south of Italy and the vines have survived wars, natural disasters and the phylloxera outbreak. Maixei, the range of wines created by the Riviera dei Fiori Società agricultural cooperative in Liguria (Italy) joined this ambitious project in 2012 with their flagship wine Barbadirame Dolceacqua Superiore.

Maixei Barbadirame Dolceacqua Superiore is a wine born on clay and sandy soils in an area of foothills ranging from 300 to 600 metres above sea level. These slopes are supported by dry stone walls, called “maixei” in the local dialect and the vines are growing the native Rossese di Ventimiglia variety mainly cultivated as saplings, so that the clusters are shaded and protected from the sun during the hottest hours of the day. The vines are cultivated using traditional agriculture and yields are limited by hectare. Once the grapes are harvested by hand, selected and gently pressed when they reach the winery, fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature (30°C) in stainless steel tanks using selected yeasts. During maceration (6-8 days), the fermenting mash is pumped over with delestage to optimise the extraction of colour and body. The wine is then aged and undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels until bottling.

Inspired by the peasant tradition, Maixei Dolceacqua Superiore Barbadirame is a Rossese di Dolceacqua Superiore DOC that aims to serve as a tribute to the most charming and proudly peasant medieval town in Liguria, Italy.

 

2019

Maixei Dolceacqua Superiore Barbadirame 2019 is a richly concentrated red wine exuding aromas of ripe red and black fruits, violet and rose floral undertones, and hints of liquorice. On the palate, it is smooth, warm, and velvety. This wine boasts an exquisitely refined tannic texture with subtle woody notes that do not overshadow the grape's varietal character but rather enhance its complexity.
