About Makatzak Sorkin

Witches have always had a place in the popular imagination. In the Basque Country alone, there are more than 60 places with names inspired by them. Magical places that you just need to walk around to feel their influence. Sorgintxulo (the witch’s hole) is located on the mountain that, according to local legend, is where witches gathered to perform their rituals and spells in ancient times. This is where winemaker Aitor Irazu and his cousin Jon Estebanez set up their own project Makatzak Wild Wines. With 3 hectares of vineyards in the town of Aia (Gipuzkoa) and a great passion for natural wines, they present one of the most interesting Atlantic viticulture projects of recent times.

This is clear to see in Makatzak Sorkin, a white wine from a Hondarribi Zuri and Hondarribi Beltza vineyard that had been abandoned for 5 years and that, with hard work and regenerative and biodynamic practices, has started growing a quality fruit ready for minimal intervention winemaking. The grapes are harvested by hand in 15 kg boxes and carefully selected in the vineyard. In the winery, fermentation is carried out with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The wine is then aged on fine lees without battonage for 5 months. It is bottled without filtering or clarifying.

The result is Makatzak Sorkin, an exceptional Txakoli with wonderful acidity and freshness. A white wine that exudes all the magic of a unique project run by two cousins who love wine and the land they come from.

 

2021

Makatzak Sorkin 2021 is an aromatic white wine with notes of white fruit, accompanied by hints of citrus and herbal touches. On the palate it is fresh, lively and citrusy. A light-bodied wine, with noticeable acidity, a herbaceous finish and medium persistence. Limited production of 3,063 bottles.
