Maupertuis La Guillaume 2020 is a single-variety Gamay. The palate is juicy, strong and light, with notes of blackberry, blueberry, raspberry. Its balanced acidity, soft tannins and elegant and sharp finish are also outstanding. The nose is dominated by notes of black fruits and orange peel.

About Maupertuis La Guillaume

According to Spanish writer Mateo Alemán, “desire conquers fear”. We don’t know whether Jean Maupertais felt panic or mistrust, but what we do know is that his fascination and love for natural wines led him to leave his job in IT to set up his own winery. In 1992 he bought a small vineyard in Clermont-Ferrand, in Auvergne (one of the oldest regions of France located in the centre of the country). From there he moved to Macon (an hour’s drive from Lyon), where he met Marcel Lapierre, who introduced him to the world of natural wines. Today, from the garage under his house, he is one of the world leaders in this type of production. Maupertuis La Guillaume is one of these wines.

This wine is made with Gamay and Pinot Noir growing on 3 hectares in the village of Saint-Georges-ès-Allier, at an altitude of 450 metres. The grapes are naturally harvested, and the grapes are taken directly to the garage. The Maupertuis La Guillaume vinification process begins with a three-week carbonic maceration, where the bunches ferment whole (without separating the grapes from the stems). The wine, which has not had any chemicals added to it in the vineyard, is also not refined or filtered before bottling.
