About Maupertuis La Plage
While they may not be widely recognized now, —even within France itself—, the wines of Auvernia have historically been held in high esteem. During the 19th century, this region, located in the heart of the country (in the Limagne basin), was experiencing its Golden Age. Specifically, it was the third-largest wine-producing area in France. However, a phylloxera outbreak in 1895 followed by a mildew epidemic in 1910 caused a decline in the production volume of these wines, which had been cherished by notable figures such as Louis XIV or Henry IV. Today, their reputation still lingers, albeit not as prominently as in the past. Yet within the A.O.C. Côtes d’Auvergne, exquisite gems like Maupertuis La Plage, a natural wine crafted by Jean Maupertuis, remain hidden.
The tale of this vintner —formerly a computer scientist— can be summarized as pure passion. His journey began in 1992 with the acquisition of a small vineyard as a mere hobby. This pastime eventually evolved into something more, leading him to leave his job to devote himself entirely to winemaking. Therefore, after studying enology in Mâcon, where he met Marcel Lapierre (who introduced him to the world of natural wine), he ended up cultivating pinot noir and Auvernia's queen grape: gamay. In his vineyards, at an altitude of 450 meters and on volcanic soil, there is no room for fertilizers or herbicides, and everything is done by hand.
As for the production of Maupertuis La Plage, Jean Maupertuis opts for methods that protect the grape without the need for chemical additives, such as carbonic maceration. During this process, the whole clusters naturally ferment. Once complete, Maupertuis La Plage is racked and bottled, uncleaned, unfiltered, and without the addition of sulfur.
| 2022 | Maupertuis La Plage 2022 is an effervescent red wine that beckons one to revel in its youthful exuberance and zest. As one brings the glass to the nose, an array of red fruit aromas unfurls, featuring strawberries and cherries, complemented by a nuanced hint of ripe black fruits. On the palate, its vivacious character is evident through a smooth and genial texture, accentuating the impression of fresh fruit that lingers into a delightful and eminently quaffable finish. It is the quintessential choice for those in search of an unpretentious wine brimming with vitality. |

| 2020 | Maupertuis La Plage 2020 is a juicy red wine made from Gamay. The nose offers a fruity aromatic palette (red cherry and redcurrant) with hints of pepper. The palate is medium-bodied, with red fruit flavours, balanced acidity and a slightly acidic aftertaste, with earthy hints. |
