French white wine

Some of the most expensive and famous white wines

France is undoubtedly the country with the strongest reputation for wine around the world. It is blessed with the perfect climates and soils for making wines with exceptional finesse. While its red wines are highly sought after around the world, France is also the birthplace of some of the most expensive and famous french white wines. Burgundy offers silky and elegant white wines with a sublime expression of the Chardonnay grape; in Alsace they make aromatic Gewürztraminer white wines; The Jura region is home to wines with a special character, some of which age under a yeast cap, and then there are the prestigious Sauvignon Blanc wines from the Loire Valley. France produces dry, fruity, mineral white wines, even natural wines that are made in contact with their skins known as orange wines. In short, there is something to suit all tastes and occasions and we would encourage you to try them.

French white wines are not as famous as French reds. However, France also produces a range of spectacular whites that have nothing to be jealous of in their red counterparts; they are thought to be some of the best in the world.

A third of French vineyard space is planted with white varieties. In general, most of the white grapes are concentrated in the north of the country, where the cooler climate is better for them. Broadly speaking, these areas are Burgundy, the Loire Valley and Alsace. Unlike in other regions where they usually make coupages, these French white wines are single-variety, meaning they are made with one variety only.

Most important areas.

Perhaps the best-known French white wine is from Chablis, in northern Burgundy, where the Chardonnay variety reigns. It is sometimes vinified in stainless steel tanks to keep it more fresh and fruity, with other producers looking for a more unctuous and long-living wine, and so use barrels for aging. Chardonnay wines from Chablis and Burgundy are world leading.

Alsace is another region where famous, high quality white wines are produced. The predominant varieties in this area are Riesling and Gewürstraminer. Alsatian wines are very aromatic, fruity and floral, with excellent freshness.

Finally, it is also worth mentioning the wines from the Loire Valley. Chenin, Sauvignon Blanc and Melon de Bourgogne, also known as Muscadet, are the most common varieties here.

However there are many more French regions where they make white wines with unique characteristics. In Jura, Savagnin is the native variety, in the North of the Rhone the Viognier rules and in the South the focus is on Marsanne and Roussanne...

Main producers of French white wine.

Some of the wineries that express an area at its best are Bott-Geyl in Alsace, Louis Latour and Joseph Drouhin in Burgundy and Domaines Landron in the Loire.
